Strategic Insights: Deltana Engineering's Opportunity in the Yonge North Subway Extension Project

Yonge North Subway Extension Project

13/08/2025

The recent award of the Yonge North Subway Extension's advance tunneling contract to the North End Connectors consortium, a team that includes the Spanish company FCC, marks a significant milestone. With a contract value of $1.4 billion, this project is a testament to the continued growth of Ontario's transit infrastructure.

Key Highlights from Project Sources:

  • Project Award:The $1.4 billion Design-Build-Finance contract was awarded by Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx to the North End Connectors consortium.

  • Spanish Involvement: The consortium includes Spanish firm FCC, which holds a 33.3% interest, and TYPSA Inc., which is a key member of the design team.

  • Project Scope & Timeline: The project involves the design and construction of twin 6.3-kilometer tunnels. Construction is anticipated to begin in Q4 2026 and reach completion in 2030.

This development follows a pattern of Spanish companies, like FCC, securing major transit projects in Ontario, including the Ontario Line. This trend presents a significant opportunity for local engineering firms with specialized expertise.

Deltana Engineering: Ready to Contribute

Our proven experience on the Ontario Line—especially in Quantities Take-Off (QTO) activities and Technical Office support under our BOCE (Back Office Construction Engineering) methodology — presents a future opportunity for Deltana to increase its expertise and presence in this market, as it is already involved in four other packages for consortia in charge of the Rolling Stock, Systems, Operations and Maintenance (RSSOM), Elevated Guideway and Stations (EGS), Southern Civils, Stations and Tunnels, and Pape Tunnel and Underground Stations (PTUS) projects.

We’ve delivered robust QTO services on projects like the Ontario Line. Additionally, we have coordinated multidisciplinary BIM efforts and produced detailed shop drawings in regulated, high-stakes environments. Our methodology enables seamless integration from design to construction, capitalizing on data-driven workflows that enhance constructibility and execution.

With consortiums led by Spanish companies with a significant presence in Canada now also in YNSE, Deltana is strategically positioned to potentially collaborate, offering complementary QTO services, BIM coordination, and technical office support to reinforce the delivery guarantee of Spanish engineering teams.

Commitment to Engineering Excellence

Our proven ability to collaborate on engineering projects around the world and our particular experience in Canada position us as a strategic partner. We are ready to apply our technical expertise and collaborative approach to the North End Connectors consortium to ensure the success of this vital project.
