Do you know how to achieve traceable and verifiable measurements in a project?

Quantity take-offs (QTO) are a detailed measurement of materials and labor needed to complete a construction project. They are developed by an estimator during the pre-construction phase. This process is base don the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) which means breaking the project down into smaller and more manageable units that are easier to measure or estimate. The level of detail required for measurement may vary according to each estimator or project manager.

These measures are used to define the scope of the project and break down its cost elements. At Deltana Engineering we make these estimates based on reviewing drawings, specifications and models to find these quantities. As experienced estimators we have developed procedures to facilitate quantity take off and its traceability.

Many programs have been developed to aid in the efficiency of these processes. With BIM, the quantity take-off can be performed almost automatically as long as the model has the correct parameterization and indicates the type of materials and meets the criteria established in the WBS.

When making measurements in projects, whether to prepare the Bill Of Quantities (BOQ) for a tender or for the purposes of keeping track of a work in progress or for subcontracting, it is very important that these measurements are traceable and verifiable by someone other than the one who made it. This gives confidence in the quantities reflected and, in addition, allows comparisons to be made with an independent measurement to ensure said reliability.

For this, it is essential to have adequate tools that allow the integration of cost management and all the variables of a building or civil works. The ease of integration of this tool into the BOQ database, which is normally registered in Excel, is important to be able to link each item measured with the source of extraction of said quantities.

One of the other softwares that we use at Deltana Engineering is Presto® which is aimed at facilitating the standardization, reuse and exchange of data between the different agents of the project and is linked in an easy and agile way to the WBS in Excel. In this way, all the information is kept integrated in the BOQ, from planning to certifications, including the economic control of the work. With this tool we can customize the creation of demonstrative reports, reflect the extraction of measurements from AutoCAD drawings (DWG format) or from BIM models. With this we can optimize, edit, filter, date, import and compare measurements from Presto or other sources, as well as generate customized open and flexible reports.

In this way we can offer our clients integrated information that allows associating the breakdown of measurements, files and data that define any building and civil works project since we can convert any Excel sheet that contains a budget or a table of structured items into a Presto budget.

In this way we can offer our clients an integrated information system that allows associating the breakdown of measurements, files and data that define any building and civil works project since we can convert any Excel sheet that contains quantities or a table of items structured into a Presto database.

In the case of BIM models, we can customize the export from a Revit model with Cost-It, reorder the BOQ chapters, select the unit of measurement or choose the measurement criteria for each category.
