The new bridge over the Calcasieu River in Louisiana

15/02/2024

The consortium Calcasieu Bridge Partners (CBP), formed by Sacyr, Acciona and Plenary Americas, signed yesterday with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) a comprehensive agreement to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the new bridge over the Calcasieu River on the I-10 highway in Louisiana (USA).

The contract for this 9 km infrastructure includes a 50-year concession period, which will require an investment of US$2.1 billion (1.9 billion euros).

The widening of the I-10 includes the construction of a six-lane roadway and the implementation of a free-flow tolling system, as well as several structures, ramps and bridge approaches.

The new bridge over the Calcasieu River will replace the existing bridge, which was built in the 1950s and is, according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), one of the worst in the country. The new infrastructure will increase capacity and improve traffic comfort and safety.

Construction of the bridge is scheduled to begin as early as 2024 and be operational in 2031. It will serve a daily traffic flow of more than 90,000 vehicles in 2040.

The project includes the modification and relocation of existing roads and approaches, and the demolition of the existing bridge once the new one is in operation.

The CBP consortium consists of Sacyr (30%), Acciona (30%) and Plenary Americas (40%). Construction of the bridge will be carried out by a 50/50 joint venture of Sacyr and Acciona.

During the bidding process, Deltana Engineering took an active part, interacting with the consortium's technical teams for the preparation of the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and Bill of Quantities (BOQ). We are proud to have collaborated with the consortium for the award of the contract for this great project, which is the largest of Louisiana Transportation's projects and one of the largest tendered in North America in 2023.

We expect to continue collaborating in the execution phase with an approach oriented to the constructivity of the designs, through one of our business lines called Back Office Construction Engineering (BOCE) that contemplates the elaboration of transition BOQ and its continuous update according to the progress of the design, its segmentation according to the phases of execution or subcontracting. In addition, the implementation of the design with the executive detailing (Shop drawings) of the different specialties such as structure, facilities and landscape, BIM support for the elaboration of conceptual models, complementation, scaling and/or parameterization of the design models.
